Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.

The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.

Anonymous vows to 'destroy' Facebook on Nov5

Hacktivist group Anonymous has threatened to "destroy" by November 5 social networking giant Facebook, which it accused of "selling" users' data to "authoritarian" governments.

In a message posted on video-sharing site YouTube, Anonymous said people who want to protect the freedom of information should "join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy."

"Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria," it said.

It said everything users do "stays" on Facebook, regardless of their privacy settings, adding deleting one's account is "impossible."

The hacktivist group urged the public to "think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5, 2011."

"One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right," it said.

'Strange' move

A blog entry on Village Voice, however, said it was strange that a hacker group that had stolen information "as they please" now claims to want to protect privacy.

Anonymous had teamed with Lulz Security to hack several government and corporate websites earlier this year.

"Doesn't that sound strange, coming from people who routinely steal private information as they please? But this echoes the manifesto of a related group, LulzSec, whose nihilistic perspective on the state of the Internet kind of made sense," it said.

"Will Anonymous be able to successfully lay waste to Mark Zuckerberg's fortress? This is set to be the Internet showdown of the year," it added.

Anonymous' social network hacked

On the other hand, Anonymous' latest threat came in the wake of its upcoming social network AnonPlus being hacked and defaced earlier this week.

The attack on AnonPlus (anonplus.com) was supposedly in retaliation for the group's attack on Syria.

A report on The Hacker News on Tuesday afternoon said the home page of social network AnonPlus (www.anonplus.com) was replaced with a message that read "Terrorist kills."

"In response to your hacking to the website of the Syrian Ministry of Defence, the Syrian people have decided to purify the internet of [y]our pathetic website. Your website has been hacked, and here we leave you these photos showing the scale of terrorism committed by Muslim Brotherhood Organization, whose members have been killing Syrian citizens - civilians and military," read the message on a screenshot of the defaced site, posted on The Hacker News.

It added Anonymous had been "defending this (terrorist) organization" and that the defacement "is our response."

The Hacker News reported the defacement followed Anonymous' claiming responsibility for defacing the website of Syria's Ministry of Defense.

As of Tuesday afternoon, visitors to anonplus.com were redirected to another site, anonplus.bombshellz.net, which appeared to be a mirror site.

While the screenshot did not say who defaced the site, The Hacker News said the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab "credited the AnonPlus defacement to the 'Syrian Electronic Army.'"

It was the second time the group's upcoming social network was defaced.

Last July, the AnonPlus site was hacked and defaced, leaving the administrators stewing.

In the July attack, a Turkish hacker, “Akincilar," defaced the site with a tampered logo of Anonymous, with the head of a dog. The “Cyber-Warrior" logo was placed above the tampered Anonymous symbol.

AnonPlus was made public last July, amid reports that its members decided to form the new social network after being kicked out of Google’s Google+. — TJD, GMA News

Prenup shoot at Libingan ignites online firestorm

Tasteless. Crass. Outrageous. Disrespectful.

These were just some of the words by Internet users describing the creative prenuptial photos of couple Ruskin and Priscilla taken at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, resting place of Filipino soldiers and dignitaries.

There appears nothing wrong with the couple's choice of a unique venue — it does, after all, offer scenic views and comely perspectives of white crosses sprawled against Bermuda grass — but they took the shoot a notch up with unusual poses.

In the prenup's gallery posted on the website of East Digital Studio, commissioned by the couple to do the shoot, the two were frolicking in the cemetery grounds seemingly oblivious to the field of crosses that lay behind them. (As of this posting, the controversial photos have been taken down from the studio’s website, except for a couple of images.)

In one photo, Priscilla — toasting with a glass of wine on her right — is sitting atop one of the crosses as three bottles of expensive spirits are on a small table in front of her.

In another picture, Ruskin was photographed sitting on a cross and puffing on a cigarette, but the two had switched garbs — he was wearing Priscilla's long black dress, she was in Ruskin's traditional Barong Tagalog.

Still, in another shot, the groom-to-be is hugging tight a cross, a wide grin across his face, as if posing for a "wacky" shot.

The photos seemed meant to break the conventions of prenuptial shoots where couples are often photographed in sweet, mushy moments that draw a chorus of "Awwww..." from women.

Netizens unimpressed

Filipino social media users and forum posters, however, were not impressed by the couple's "stunt."

"Unfortunately, a lot of Filipinos absolutely have no sense of love of country," lamented PinoyExchange user _Bahay_Kubo_.

Said user ransom on the Philippine Mac Users Group forum: "I haven't quite decided myself. Part of me finds it original, another part can't help but think this was done in rather bad taste. These are the graves of our soldiers around which they're frolicking and striking funny poses."

"The cemetery being labeled as 'Libingan ng mga Bayani' deserves respect. If they just wanted a cemetery for a photoshoot they could just have picked other cemeteries," argued Peyups.com user toophakeen.

Esoteric concepts

Others, however, saw nothing wrong with the whole thing.

User boybastos15 of PinoyExchange forum said he wasn't offended by the shots. "Picture lang naman...they didn't vandalized or made the place dirty naman e," he said.

"Unless we are actually affected, as in personally offended, we shouldn't bash... others. "honoring the dead" and "honoring heroes" are esoteric concepts made-up by the mind which these two strangers may not believe in," argued fightingmaroon on Peyups.com.

In a comment on social networking site Google+, Commission on Elections spokesperson James Jimenez said the outrage against the act can limit the allowable spectrum for artistic expression.

"If someone did something that someone else thought was outrageous and that someone else mounts a social media shame campaign and stampedes a gov't agency to buy into the campaign, then what form of expression is safe? Only the ones we like?" Jimenez asked.

Comedian Gabe Mercado, one of those who first posted about the issue online and whose tweet garnered more than 90 retweets on Wednesday, argued that while artistic expression is an accepted idea, expressing oneself distastefully in a place deserving respect defines the limit of self-expression.

"In the same manner that we sing the national anthem a certain way and we fold the flag with respect, it is my belief that the same courtesy should be extended to the Libingan ng mga Bayani," Mercado said.

Mercado and Jimenez were, however, united against calling for a boycott of the studio.

"Please, no to boycotts. Let's be proactive and just ask for more stringent applications of rules already in place at the Libingan," Mercado stressed.

It happened once before...

Online users pointed out that the couple was probably trying to replicate an earlier prenup shoot involving Jay Contreras of the band Kamikaze and Sarah Abad, sister of actress Kaye Abad.

In this earlier photoshoot, the couple was seen in similar unusual shots taken at the Clark Veterans Cemetery in Clark Field, Pampanga.

There was no outcry against them.

Responding to the outcry, the studio offered an apology to those who were offended.

"We are agreeable with your empathy on the reverence of our beloved remains at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani and it is our utmost apology to had conducted a prenuptial pictorial in that holy ground," the company said.

It was the couple's idea to hold the shoot at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, and the studio and its photographers just heeded the client's requests, according to East Digital.

Today With Kris Aquino was a Philippine talk show hosted by actress Kris Aquino which premiered on April 1, 1996 on ABS-CBN. It was dubbed as "the first interactive talk show" and was considered as the Philippines' version of the Oprah Winfrey show.

It was also where Aquino got her title as the "Philippines' Queen of Talk." The theme song was sung by Zsa Zsa Padilla.

History

This show became the launching show for Aquino since she left GMA Network in 1996. In April 1997, it transferred its timeslot from afternoon (4:00 PM) to morning (11:00 AM), replacing the defunct talk show Teysi ng Tahanan. It also expanded its running time from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

In March 2001, the show ended due to Noli de Castro's decision to run for the senate and leave TV Patrol. Korina Sanchez, who was then hosting Balitang K, was appointed to host TV Patrol. With these changes, Aquino was appointed to replace Sanchez, changing her title to Balitang Kris. Today with Kris Aquino was replaced by Talk TV.

In May 2011, Aquino tweeted that the show will be on air again on June 2011, a decade after the show ended. Aquino will reprise her hosting duty .

Fake bin Laden death photo goes viral, tricks media

A fake photograph of a man's bloodied face allegedly belonging to Osama bin Laden has made the rounds online, tricking even major news outlets into falling for the bait, sources confirm.

The photo, which was reportedly aired first by a Pakistani TV network, went viral a few hours after US President Barack Obama's announcement of the death of the al-Qaeda leader, Reuters reports.

"The world needed a genuine photo to confirm that the elusive Islamic militant leader was dead," the news agency said. "But was it really Bin Laden?"

Reuters said there was "odd pixelation and blurring on his face, which was also darker in some areas," making the photo suspect.

The bottom part of the face also resembled a photo of bin Laden that Reuters took in 1998, it added.

"After overlaying the 1998 photo with the picture of the dead bin Laden we had a perfect match. The mouth, ear and beard were identical," it confirmed.

Falling prey

Other news agencies, however, weren't so discerning about the authenticity of the photo.

News websites such as The Daily Mail, The Sun, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom, and The New York Post in the United States all ran the photo, even without confirmation from US or Pakistani officials regarding its authenticity.

The photo has since been taken down from the newspapers' websites.

The Associated Press, meanwhile, retracted the photograph release it sent to subscribers worldwide, saying it cannot independently verify the veracity nor the source of the photo.

Spreading malware

Bin Laden's death has been such a hot topic online that, naturally, cybercriminals started to exploit its sudden surge of online activity, feeding into vulnerable users' curiosity.

Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab confirmed that cybercriminals have already spread rogueware via Blackhat SEO and Google Images, due to the increased seach activity on bin Laden's death.

A worm has likewise spread on Facebook, posting a video on users' walls titled "See picture of bin laden dead!" and described as "This will leave you speechless."

The security firm had also seen versions of the malware on Facebook's sidebar advertisements, enticing users to click on a link that leeds to free items "to celebrate Osama's death."

Mulling Release

The Obama administration, meanwhile, is still mulling the official release of photos of bin Laden's corpse to allay doubts that US forces had indeed killed him.

Officials described the photo as particularly "gruesome."

"What we don't want to do is to release anything that might be either misunderstood or that would cause other problems," said President Barack Obama's top counter-terrorism adviser, John Brennan, speaking on National Public Radio. — TJD, GMA News

Google Offers Staff Engineer $3.5 Million To Turn Down Facebook Offer

In September I wrote about Google’s “extraordinary” efforts to stop employees, particularly engineers, from resigning to join pre-IPO startups like LinkedIn, Twitter and especially Facebook. In one case we confirmed an engineer making around $150,000 turned down a 15% raise plus $500,000 in restricted stock and left for Facebook anyway.

That’s all chump change now. We’ve confirmed today that a staff engineer at Google being heavily romanced by Facebook was offered a jaw dropping $3.5 million in restricted stock by Google (this means Google is handing over stock worth $3.5 million based on its value today, and that stock will vest over time). He quite wisely accepted Google’s counter offer. Facebook lost this one.

From our previous post in September:

Sources close to Google told us that about 80% of people stay when they’re offered a counter to a Facebook offer. But some still leave. Part of that may be that Facebook is quietly telling people, never in writing, that there’s no reason their stock won’t hit $100 billion in total valuation over the next couple of years. No guarantees, yadda yadda, but hey if you get 1/10 of 1%, that’s $100 million in stock. Now it’s a party.

Google isn’t making these kind of counter offers to everyone, but it’s not a one off, either. It seems to me that every Google engineer at least should be taking a personal day to go collect a Facebook offer. Even if it’s just to get a counter offer from their current employer.

However effective these counter offers are, they sure aren’t good for morale internally at Google. Unless, of course, you’re one of the ones winning the lottery.

Philippines' Aquino calls for end to Facebook bashing

Philippine President Benigno Aquino on Wednesday appealed for a stop to government bashing over a hostage crisis that left eight foreigners dead, but his Facebook plea triggered more condemnation.

Aquino's official Facebook page, which he had set up to promote transparency in government, has been swamped with angry comments, from barbs against bungling policemen to calls for him to quit.

"We have heard and read a lot of opinions from the public, even from foreigners that were affected," Aquino said on Facebook.

"We appeal on everyone to stop needless arguments. Let us show everyone that we, Filipinos, know how to respect and understand."

The message triggered varied replies on the page, with some expressing support but many others dismissing it outright.

"Shame on you and your government. Tender your resignation now," wrote Elfis Lee, a Hong Kong resident.

"Your incompetence of leading your untrained stupid police force caused such a tragedy."

Jay Rodrigo apologised on behalf of Filipinos, but had strong words about his feelings towards Aquino, who won the presidency by a landslide in May but whose popularity now appears to be taking a direct hit from the tragedy.

"You see, our president is a retard who has done nothing but smirk in front of the TV cameras after all that has happened," he replied on the page.

"He's slowly killing our country coz of his stupidity."

An ex-policeman seized a bus-load of 22 Hong Kong tourists and three Filipinos Monday, triggering a 12-hour face-off that ended in a bloodbath following a police assault.

Aside from the gunman, eight tourists were killed, triggering angry comments from Hong Kong where the government has issued a travel warning for the Philippines.

It also put the spotlight on longstanding problems with the Philippine police force, which admitted to blunders in handling the crisis.

The Internet-savvy Aquino, 50, used social networking sites to promote his anti-corruption campaign and vows of full transparency in the run-up to the election.

His official Facebook page has 1.94 million fans.

Profile and Page Roadmap Update

We announced plans last October to remove application boxes and application info sections as well as reduce the width of application tabs to optimize for the new profile and Facebook Pages format. We will be moving forward with these changes the week of August 23, and want to help you understand what to expect.

Based on feedback from developers, we have committed to the following plans to ensure a smooth transition:

* Boxes. We will notify users via messaging in profile boxes and in the Help Center that the "Boxes" tab, boxes on profiles and Pages, and application info sections will be going away.
* Application Tabs. Next week, we will give Page admins the ability to preview their custom tabs in the new 520 pixel width so they can modify their layouts as needed. All profile and Page tabs will be resized automatically beginning the week of August 23.

These updates are designed to simplify navigation for users, reduce complexity for developers, and enable us to build the next generation of tools for growing your business with Facebook. We'll share more of our plans for the roadmap in the coming weeks.

1. Make business personal

People primarily use Facebook to share personal information with friends. The more you showcase the human element of your business, your products, and your people, the stronger of an effect it will have on everyone who views it.

2. Update your Facebook Page frequently

Facebook is geared to highlight new information and recent changes. The more often you add new content, the more often people will come back to your Facebook Page. You can also send Updates to your fans to announce in-store events, special promotions, new products, concerts, screenings, or other news.

3. Harness the power of News Feed

The News Feed on users’ home pages tells them what their friends are doing. When users become your fan, News Feed tells their friends and invites them to become fans as well. In turn, this can lead to the friends of their friends finding out about your business through their News Feeds, and so on in a virtuous cycle. Enable applications like Reviews, the Wall or Photos to encourage users to engage. Their actions can generate more News Feeds stories to their friends about their engagement with your business. News Feed is the key to spreading your message virally on Facebook.

4. Choose the applications that are best for your business

Facebook and its 200,000 outside developers have built thousands of free applications for businesses, bands, and every other type of organization. Your Page comes with the basics pre-installed, but you can easily add whichever other applications are right for your business. For instance, a restaurant may choose to add an application for online ordering or reservations, while a film may add a cinema-locator so the user can find the nearest screening without ever leaving Facebook. You can even build your own applications. The more useful your applications are to your customers, the faster your fan base will grow.

5. Promote your Page through Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads allow you to reach exactly the audience you want and bring them to your Page. Facebook works to create a trusted environment, especially around Facebook Pages. This environment helps define the identities of the people and brands with which you interact. Usernames for Facebook Pages communicate this identity and make it easier for people to find and interact with your Page. People can enter the Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or on search engines to locate your Page. In addition, usernames allow public entities to easily promote their presence on Facebook with a short URL. I am going to be straightforward here. Do you like Facebook? I mean, is it just a casual connection or you go in way too deep into the Labyrinth. So you can live without it, but the application to tap a mouse the fastest among your friends holds a strange appeal? Or is it just a tiny break you take between work to kick some Mafia butt, and a few minutes somehow turns into an hour or two? Welcome to the world of Facebook addiction. Panic not, because you are not alone. In all possibility, you belong to a vast majority.

And if you think: shoo!! Who cares about the stupid networking site! I’m so not addicted! I would like to insist that you just go through the preliminary process and find out if you are, in fact, truly clean of the Facebook bug.

10. The first thing you do when you log in: Do you check whose birthday it is today? Because, you feel that gifting a cake with candles from the Facebook gift shop is a pretty warm gesture. And you like to be remembered as a caring person with a sound memory. Worry not, if your case stops right here, I would only say that your infection is mild. 3. Holy cow! Has it really been that long?!: You hyperventilate in panic, as you look at the digital clock on your screen. For one thing, you need to tell everyone what you just did, even if it was something as insignificant as tripping on a banana peel on the street. You need to know how your friends feel about it, and if they aren’t quick, you might as well post some pictures about it to consolidate the information. And come whatever may, updating your status is the first and the last thing whenever you are alive on the site. I would prescribe you to some sessions on the electric chair, and maybe a few Valium shots, to be managed once every few hours.

(CBS) Facebook claims it has 400 million users. But are they well-protected from prying eyes, scammers and unwanted marketers?

Not according to Joan Goodchild, senior editor of CSO (Chief Security Officer) Online.

She says your privacy may be at far greater risk of being violated than you know when you log onto Facebook, due to security gaffes or marketing efforts by the company.

Facebook came under fire this week, when 15 privacy and consumer protection organizations filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, charging that the site, among other things, manipulates privacy settings to make users' personal information available for commercial use. Also, some Facebook users found their private chats accessible to everyone on their contact list - a major security breach that's left a lot of people wondering just how secure the site is.

In two words, asserts Goodchild - not very.

On "The Early Show on Saturday Morning," she spotlighted five dangers she says Facebook users expose themselves to, probably without aware of it:

• Your information is being shared with third parties

• Privacy settings revert to a less safe default mode after each redesign

• Facebook ads may contain malware

• Your real friends unknowingly make you vulnerable

• Scammers are creating fake profiles

Is Facebook a secure platform to communicate with your friends?

Here's the thing; Facebook is one of the most popular sites in the world. … Security holes are being found on a regular basis. … It is not as inherently secure as people think it is when they log on every day.

Certainly, there are growing pains. Facebook is considered a young company and it has been around a few years now. It is continuing to figure this out. They are so young they are still trying to figure out how they are going to make money. They don't even have a revenue model yet. It is hard to compare this to others; we have never had this phenomenon before in the way people are communicating with each other - only e-mail comes close.

The potential for crime is real. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, victims of Internet-related crimes lost $559 million in 2009. That was up 110 percent from the previous year. If you're not careful using Facebook, you are looking at the potential for identity theft, or possibly even something like assault if you share information with a dangerous person you think is actually a "friend." One British police agency recently reported the number of crimes they've responded to in the last year involving Facebook climbed 346 percent. These are real threats.

Lately, it seems a week doesn't go by without some new news about a Facebook-related security problem.

Earlier this week, a publication called "TechCrunch" discovered a security hole that made it possible for users to read their friends' private chats. Facebook has since patched it, but who knows how long that flaw existed? Some speculate it may have been that way for years.

Last month, researchers at VeriSign's iDefense group discovered a hacker was selling Facebook user names and passwords in an underground hacker forum. It was estimated he had about 1.5 million accounts - and was selling them for between $25 and $45.

And the site is constantly under attack from hackers trying to spam these 400 million users, or harvest their data, or run other scams. Certainly, there is a lot of criticism in the security community of Facebook's handling of security. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is that the company rarely responds to inquiries.

Do people really have privacy on Facebook?

No. There are all kinds of ways third parties can access information about you. For instance, you may not realize that, when you are playing the popular games on Facebook, such as Farmville, or take those popular quizzes, every time you do that, you authorize an application to be downloaded to your profile that you may not realize gives information to third parties.

Does Facebook share info about users with third parties through things such as Open Graph?

Open Graph is a new concept for them - they unveiled it last week at a conference. It actually is basically a way to share the information in your profile with all kinds of third parties, such as partner websites, so they can have a better idea of your interests and what you are discussing, so they can - as they portray it - "make it a more personal experience."

The theory behind Open Graph - even if they have not implemented it - is their whole business model, isn't it?

Well, that is the business model - they are trying to get you to share as much information as possible so they can monetize it by sharing it with advertisers.

Isn't it in Facebook's best interest to get you to share as much info as possible?

It absolutely is. Facebook's mission is to get you to share as much information as it can so it can share it with advertisers. As it looks now, the more info you share the more they are going to with advertisers and make more money.

It is not only sharing the information: Isn't there a security problem every time they redesign the site?

Every time Facebook redesigns the site, which happens at least a few times a year, it puts your privacy settings back to a default in which, essentially, all of your information is made public. It is up to you, the user, to check the privacy settings and decide what you want to share and what you don't want to share.

Facebook does not notify you of the changes, and your privacy settings are set back to a public default. Many times, you may find out through friends. Facebook is not alerting you to these changes; it is just letting you know the site has been redesigned.

Can your real friends on Facebook also can make you vulnerable?

Absolutely. Your security is only as good as your friend's security. If someone in your network of friends has a weak password and his or her profile is hacked, he or she can now send you malware, for example. There is a common scam called a 419 scam, in which someone hacks your profile and send messages to your friends asking for money - claiming to be you - saying, "Hey, I was in London, I was mugged, please wire me money." People fall for it. People think their good friend needs help - and end up wiring money to Nigeria.

A lot of websites we use display banner ads, but do we have to be wary of them on Facebook?

Absolutely: Facebook has not been able to screen all of its ads. It hasn't done a great job of vetting which ads are safe and which are not. As a result, you may get an ad in your profile whey you are browsing around one day that has malicious code in it. In fact, last month there was an ad with malware that asked people to download antivirus software that was actually a virus.

Is too big a network of friends dangerous?

You know people with a lot of friends, 500, 1000 friends on Facebook? What is the likelihood they are all real? There was study last year that concluded that 40 percent of all Facebook profiles are fake. They have been set up by bots or impostors. If you have 500 friends, it is likely there is a percentage of people you don't really know and you are sharing a lot of information with them, such as when you are on vacation, your children's pictures, their names. Is this information you really want to put out there to people you don't even know?

A total of 5,019 unique ballots were counted for this poll. The Facebook Election 2010 Application allows supporters to vote only once every round to ensure data integrity. Facebook has an estimated number of 9.5 million active users in the Philippines with ages 18 years old and above.

With more than 400 million active visitors, Facebook is arguably the most popular social networking site out there. And while the site is known for the casual social aspect, many users also use it as a professional networking tool. With that kind of reach, Facebook can be a valuable tool for connecting to former and current colleagues, clients and potential employers. In fact, surveys suggest that approximately 30% of employers are using Facebook to screen potential employees — even more than those who check LinkedIn, a strictly professional social networking site. Don't make these Facebook faux-pas — they might cost you a great opportunity.

1. Inappropriate Pictures

It may go without saying, but prospective employers or clients don't want to see pictures of you chugging a bottle of wine or dressed up for a night at the bar. Beyond the pictures you wouldn't want your grandparents to see, seemingly innocent pictures of your personal life will likely not help to support the persona you want to present in your professional life.

2. Complaining About Your Current Job

You've no doubt done this at least once. It could be a full note about how much you hate your office, or how incompetent your boss is, or it could be as innocent as a status update about how your coworker always shows up late. Everyone should know to avoid statuses like "Tom plans to call in sick tomorrow so he can get drunk on a Wednesday. Who cares that my big work project isn't done?" But you should also be aware of less flamboyant statuses like "Sarah is watching the gold medal hockey game online at her desk". Statuses that imply you are unreliable, deceitful, and basically anything that doesn't make you look as professional as you'd like, can seriously undermine your chances at landing that new job.

5. Not Understanding Your Security Settings

The security settings on Facebook have come a long way since the site started. It is now possible to customize lists of friends and decide what each list can and cannot see. However, many people do not fully understand these settings, or don't bother to check who has access to what. If you are going to use Facebook professionally, and even if you aren't, make sure you take the time to go through your privacy options. At the very least, your profile should be set so that people who are not your friend cannot see any of your pictures or information.

6. Losing by Association

You can't control what your friends post to your profile (although you can remove it once you see it), nor what they post to their own profiles or to those of mutual friends. If a potential client or employer sees those Friday night pictures your friend has tagged you in where he is falling down drunk, it reflects poorly on you, even if the picture of you is completely innocent. It's unfortunate, but we do judge others by the company they keep, at least to some extent. Take a look at everything connected to your profile, and keep an eye out for anything you wouldn't want to show your mother.

Facebook Can Help You Get Hired … or Fired

The best advice is to lock down your personal profile so that only friends you approve can see anything on that profile. Then, create a second, public profile on Facebook purely for professional use. This profile functions like an online resume, and should only contain information you'd be comfortable telling your potential employer face to face. Having a social networking profile is a good thing — it presents you as technologically and professionally savvy. Just make sure your profile is helping to present your best side — not the side that got drunk at your buddy's New Year's party.

Some of the images were taken about 110 years ago by photographers who went to the Philippines to cover the SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR and the PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR that followed it.

Fortunately, the photographers got distracted by the local culture and peoples there, and spent more time capturing images of the civilians and Philippine ways of life than they did of the American Military and battles being waged.

I hope some of these photos are interesting and useful to those who know and love the Philippines.
